city meets
How long do you have to know someone to have a relationship with them? A day? a Week? how about one second? If you bump into a guy on the street and drop a pen...(and he bends down to pick it up like in the movies and then you think he will show his face and you will instantly fall in love and neither of you will go to the places you were rushing off to because you will spend the rest of your day and lives together)...and then unlike in the movies he hands back the pen and walks away forever and you never see him again and that one second is all you have...does that count as a relationship?
All day I see people in New York forming little relationships in little moments. The frantic young lad in a suit bumps a haggard old woman and says sorry over his right shoulder with a wave of his hand. The Subway performers thank the generous audience for their not so undivided attention anyways. The young woman glares at the man outside home depot who comments on her fine ass. The man standing next to a woman waiting to cross a street asks himself and possibly her why there's no damn crossing sign here. The drunk girl asks a group of girls if this is the right way to grand central. The man with a book looks up and meets the eyes of a girl with a book, and then they both go back to reading.
I believe that these seconds still count as relationships. I think about my little moments with people all the time. Some one second interactions haunt me for days. The city is a big place, and most of the people you see are strangers. Those one second interactions help us feel a little less alone.
